What is human factors?

Human factors studies how people interact with tools, tasks, environments, and other people. It helps us design systems that fit what people can see, remember, understand, and do.

01 / The field

Look at the whole task

Imagine a driver trying to adjust the temperature on a touch screen. The question is not only whether the button is easy to tap. A researcher also asks how long the driver must look away from the road, what feedback the control gives, and what happens when the car is moving. Physical buttons, screen layouts, and voice controls can each change that task.

Practitioners observe people doing real work, interview them, study errors and near misses, measure performance, and test designs with users. They examine the person, the equipment, the instructions, the setting, and the pressures around a decision. A change might be a clearer label, a better alarm, a safer procedure, or a redesigned workflow.

You can find this work in healthcare, aviation, transportation, software, manufacturing, public services, and daily life. In a hospital, for example, a team might test how nurses identify similar medication packages during a busy shift. The aim is to reduce avoidable confusion in the system.

How it relates to UX and ergonomics

UX research studies how people experience a product or service, often through interviews, observation, and usability tests. Human factors uses many of the same methods and often considers safety, workload, and performance across a wider system. The boundaries overlap in practice.

Ergonomics often focuses on the fit between people, tasks, equipment, and physical environments. That can include reach, posture, repetitive work, and the design of controls. Many professionals use “human factors and ergonomics” as a combined name for the field.

Human systems engineering applies this knowledge while designing and evaluating complex systems. A cockpit or control room needs more than a usable screen: teams must coordinate, detect changes, manage workload, and recover when something goes wrong.
